The Real Estate Industry is plagued with many misconceptions; I am sure every other industry has its own misappropriated beliefs - #KeySuccessIdeas - they tend to creep up when a certain group of participants hit a wall, or lack in generating production. In Real Estate, Agents are in the business of helping those who wish to become homeowners; we call them Potential Buyers, and those who wish to Sell their property and move, we call them Potential Sellers.
In The United States 4.5% to 6.5% of Homeowners actually end up Selling and Moving per year; which is a big number. But that also means that 93.5% to 95.5% are not going to Sell; and I am sure you can see that that number is also huge number, over 120 Million Property Owners, and if you count all the adult occupants of a property, the number is close to over 200 Million people. The Real Estate Business looks like it is setup with a large amount or rejection!?
This is where the first lesson needs to take place; it is more akin to a Mindset Adjustment: The Property Owners who are not moving are not saying No to You; they are simply saying they are not moving today - it is a day by day, month by month, year by year affair. People don’t move until they do! Human Beings like Stability and if they are raising a family they prefer staying put in a community as the kids are growing up; some of them will still have to move due to their job, promotions, illness, raises, financial challenges, etc. A Real Estate Professional must become Zen about those who are not moving, and when interacting with them and they hear No, they end up taking it well and understanding: “If I ask 100 Homeowners I will hear Not Moving from 95 of them; that makes absolute sense - it is not personal.” Very few agents ever learn this lesson.
Lesson #2 comes in the form of taking control of your Real Estate Business. Many Agents, way too many agents, will tell you in this business you have to meet the right people at the right time in order to get listings. That is correct, if you meet the people who are thinking about moving at the right time, and up setting an appointment your chances of getting a listing are really great. But this kind of thinking is hollow and not empowering; it sounds like luck dictates this career - it does not! Good Real Estate Professionals create their luck by prospecting; their mindset is the following: “How do I create the conditions, the systems, and the activities that will put me more often in front of the people who are thinking of Buying or Selling.” - This is called a Prospecting Mindset. The bad news in our industry is less than 5% of all Real Estate Agents truly develop it.
Those who cling to the Luck Mindset of this Career leave this industry at a clip of 300,000 every 18 months; and those who turn their mind dial from luck to Prospecting, take classes on how to prospect daily, how to prioritize their prospecting, how to track their prospecting numbers, how to be held accountable for their prospecting activities end up with the listings and never look back. Your Mindset dictates your Career! - #8WeekSuccess
