Does Sleep matter in the life of an Entrepreneur? Oh my… Our Real Estate Professionals are deprived of sleep; and it is mostly of their making. #KeySuccessIdeas - Sleep in our culture is never prioritized, but eating, drinking, and watching TV are always at the top of the list. We must accept that since the late 40’s our society has gradually been dosed to a major addiction to Television. Our Homes have become boxes for Televisions; which reminds me of an episode of “Friends”, speak of the devil, in which the following interaction occurs between Joey and a young woman called Sarah:
Joey: I play Dr. Drake Ramoray.
Sarah: I'm sorry, I don't own a TV.
Joey: You don't own a TV? What's all your furniture pointed at?
Enough said about our obsession with screens; they are truly dummying us as a society.
But let me go back to sleep, many will spend 4 to 6 hours a night in front of the TV; some even lie to themselves by saying, the TV is on but I am not really watching I am multi-tasking for my work tomorrow by checking emails, responding to texts, and doing important work on Social Media. They end up going to bed a Midnight - just a terrible way to take care of your Brain Health.
So before I go on and share some studies that I hope will help you prioritize your sleep, let me first express out loud: “SLEEP IS VITAL TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH AND TO YOUR INCOME!”
A University Team in Boston concluded in their study: “Sleep physically washes toxins, including those that can lead to Alzheimer's, from your brain.” It was published in the Journal Science and in Wired Magazine; and the bottom line when you sleep is akin to taking a bath for your brain - you are cleansing toxins that built up over the long day; there is even a suspicion by other Neurologists that nightmares is an extreme flushing of this toxins.
The first takeaway is that our brain is susceptible to toxins, and therefore fatigue. Sara Harrison explained in Wired: “I discovered was that during non-REM sleep, large, slow waves of cerebrospinal fluid were washing over the brain. The EEG readings helped show why. During non-REM sleep, neurons start to synchronize, turning on and off at the same time.” She continues: “Because the neurons had all momentarily stopped firing, they didn't need as much oxygen. That meant less blood would flow to the brain. But Lewis's team also observed that cerebrospinal fluid would then rush in, filling in the space left behind.”
Myth: “I am a Night Owl, I prefer working at night.” Several things about this statement; First that statement is an affirmation - realize that; and the more you say it the more you will re-arrange your life to be a Night Person. No One is born a Morning or a Night person; humans are adaptive to their routines. Second, whether you realize it or not, as the day progresses your brain is building toxins; and sleep flushes it out - you are at your best brain-wise in the morning, not at night. Finally, I can hear you saying, but when I wake up I am too tired to work - it is simply because you are not getting your 7 to 8 hours or regular sleep in a regular way. You have more control over your mind than you realize.
So, I am going to pretend that you care about my opinion, and that you will listen to advice - I am sure since you have read this far, you are taking your career seriously, sleep seriously, or that you find me fascinating. Start going to bed between 9pm and 10pm at the latest; and even if you are not able to sleep, it is ok to toss and turn; you are teaching your body to follow your lead. Consider the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique develop by Dr. Andrew Weill, it has helped many fall asleep faster- you can find it in YouTube. Wake up between 5:30am and 6am; you must get yourself out of bed no later than 6am. If you have to do the snooze dance between 5:30am and 6am, so be it. PS: if you currently have a TV in your Bedroom get rid of it - TV is only watched in the living room; that goes for your kids too. PPS: Do not bring your Smartphone into the bedroom; you may say but Key my alarm is in my phone - terrible habit. Get yourself an old fashioned Alarm Clock, and never ever sleep with your phone by your bedside.
Create a Morning Routine that includes any or all of these suggestions; remember the Morning Time is Me-Time - time for you to become grounded, connected, spiritual, and nurturing to others. Make sure you do NOT turn the TV on, check your emails, or go on a deep dive with Social Media. Consider an exercise routine, like going for a walk; if you have pets walking them and feeding them; if you have young kids getting them ready for school; preparing breakfast for a loved one; reading your Bible; Meditating; Praying; Writing Mantras or Affirmations; and/or Reading a book of your choice for at least 10 minutes, and journaling your Business thoughts for the day.
Be Creative with your personal morning routine, it is yours and it should work for you, not others. Focus primarily on the principles of Gratitude, Giving, and Clarity by having a good center. Right before you tackle your Business Day and the avalanche of emails, texts, and Social Media Posts look over your Calendar and Prioritize your High Income Producing Activities and Appointments.
All of this is possible if you start taking care of your Brain Health by Sleeping properly, and getting rid of all the toxins that build all day long.
