Uttering the Statement that you are an Entrepreneur; an Independent Contractor; a being who earns their living by Producing Results rather than for their hourly efforts is bold; it is scary; it is even brazen. #KeySuccessIdeas - It is therefore understandable that few ever make it - as an Entrepreneur you have No Safety Net except for the belief that you can and will make it.
Well, we need to reinforce these beliefs with added Clarity and Purpose - this is where Mission Statements or Vision Statements play the biggest role; you must have a Thoughtful Mission Statement, or you end up being a ship without a rudder. The earning of Money for Entrepreneurs is a Result - NOT the Goal. This is hard to hear for those who are embarking newly on their career - say as Real Estate Professionals; if they don’t make money earnestly they end up giving up too quickly; so it sure looks like chasing the money must be the goal; I am here to tell you it isn’t! Money is the fruit of your vision; your daily approach to your business; your proper plan of action - and what ties all these ideas in a neat bow is your Personal Mission Statement.
Your Mission Statement is personal to you, and no one should dictate what should be in it, nor decide how short or long it ought to be; but there is a general agreement that it must include a general sense of your Destination; a grounded footing for your Purpose; and an essence of your Core Values and Principles. Take time to reflect on your Core Values, mix in the clarity of your Destination, and sprinkle all over it your reason for being - Purpose! I must admit it is not an easy exercise; this is why most entrepreneurs never bother to put one together. The other reason is the fear that it will box them in and they will be right back to satisfying a boss - everyone must satisfy the boss; you are the boss - and if the Head Honcho does not have Clarity of Purpose nothing gets done; no effort is expanded; so surrender to your inner clairvoyant Boss!
We all learn by examples - let’s look at a couple; I am going to focus on the Real Estate Industry. PS: I wrote these two Mission Statements and I offer you my permission to use them; tweak them; and/or ignore them:
“To Inspire and Support Homeownership in my community of Oxnard in Ventura County California; and offer Great Advice, Patient Negotiation, and Outstanding Results.”
“To Make a Difference in the lives of my Jacksonville Neighbors by offering Up to Date Market Knowledge; Outstanding Marketing Solutions; Top Notch Negotiation Skills; and Trustworthy Results.”
Think of your Mission Statement as your BIG WHY! Why do you do what you do? Why should others care that you are the one doing what you do? In other words: Why do you bother to wake up in the morning?
As an Educator, Trainer, Strategist, and Business Coach I have opted for a minimalist Mission Statement: “Nudging the Boundary of Complacency in Real Estate Success.” This low-key statement does not say much about what I do but it serves my Daily Vision and Purpose of Nudging Agents and Brokers out of their Comfort Zone, with Thoughtful Strategies, Reproducible Results, and Methodical implementation of Checklists and Marketing Systems.
I encourage you to take an afternoon away from your phone; away from your business; away from your family and friends; an afternoon of solitude and reflection. Go to your favorite away spot; walk on the beach; or simply sit at a bench in a nearby park, and start kneading your Personal Mission Statement. It does not have to be perfect - but it must be honest about who you are, what you value, and why you are choosing to sacrifice so much - My Best to You! - #8WeekSuccess
