If you are to be an Entrepreneur you will experience Scarcity, and if not handled properly it may worsen and turn into a Scarcity Mindset - #KeySuccessIdeas - I define Scarcity Mindset as becoming a master at conjuring excuses when one’s production remains scares. Scientists have studied this phenomenon and it has to do with Bandwidth, more specifically our Attention Bandwidth, or our Mind-Juggling Bandwidth.
Let me explain a bit… Let’s say you are headed to hunt for listings; you give yourself an hour a week in a neighborhood to try to secure conversations with neighbors, so you can locate a few who are thinking of either Selling or Buying. That is a Good Strategy… But, while you are focusing on that task your phone rings, or your Social Media/Email dings; because you don’t have any listings your mind attempts to steer you towards the distraction and away from what you are currently doing. You are afraid of missing something because it has been weeks since you have had a closing or a good contract. When you experience that fear of missing out, you are seeing the signs that you are in Scarcity Mode. (PS: Consider Neighborhood Prospecting 3 to 4 times a week in stretches of 90 minutes - you’ll get better results.)
When you get into the Scarcity Tunnel, any flicker of hope catches your attention; and takes you from being deliberate with the task at hand. Remember, you were doing an important prospecting task; you went to the neighborhood to hunt for potential business and all your attention should have remained on that. Had you not been in a scarcity mode, you would have ignored your Phone and all the dings; you would have focused for 60 minutes on talking to as many people as possible and eked an appointment or two.
Bandwidth; Yes your Mind has Limited Bandwidth. The more you understand that the distractions caused by desperation and/or by carelessness are hurting you; the more you will appreciate Time Blocking Activities and sticking with One Focused Prospecting Activity at the Time. You must prioritize your “hunting/fishing” activities; you have already learned how to use your spears or fishing rods; you have gathered your basket of checklists; and now you must hunt or fish for the amount of time you have decided it should be - and you must turn off your mind from any distraction.
I am going to offer a reflection and many of you will disagree with it; but do me a favor apply a little of it in the near future and tell me what changes you notice in your life - I argue it will be good for you. I call it Be in the Here and Now! When you are eating – Eat; When you are sleeping – Sleep; When you are driving – Drive; When you are reading – Read; When you are creating a flyer – Create; When you are kissing – Kiss; When you are Prospecting – Prospect; When you are loving – Love; you get the idea. I am fully aware that I am going to get a huge push back, but I am not arguing that you must do this - I am just suggesting that there are many moments in your day when this way of being proves to be very productive. - #8WeekSuccess
